Tell them that you have an appointment that you cannot get at another time and you need to work half a day.

well today I have to leave early because I have a parent-teacher confrence to pick up his report card. If you have kids that might work a couple of times.

you 80 year old neighbor just called and stated that the fire department just showed up at your house...she doesn't know why, but it could be on fire or something.
