Is any group of people really as they are often portrayed?

People who live in New York are a cross section of larger society. Very few people fit the image of the "true New Yorker" anymore. A lot of them were priced out of the market or moved away. It's sad. I came here 7 years ago hoping to find the New York I knew in the 1980s but now it's like almost everyone who grew up here is gone. There certainly aren't any "typical New York cabbies" as in the movies. I think I have met only 1 American born cabbie in 7 years and he was from Minnesota!
Some people here are arrogant, but I think most of them are like anyone else in the country.

I met some really nice New Yorkers when I was there. We hung out with them a few times and they weren't arrogant.

I took my daughter to NY a few years ago because that's where she really wanted to go. I was really worried about it and thought it might be difficult and even dangerous.
But it turned out to be lovely. The people were really friendly and polite. We had no problems at all.
It was much, much friendlier than London or Paris.

I've visited NY a few times and have yet to find the "Saturday Night Fever", "Summer of Sam", "A Bronk Tale" and "Goodfellas" scene that the movies made famous.

Not really. The accent makes them come off that way. But the ones I've met are very nice folks.

We are straight to the point and might come off as arrogant. but we are definetly cool ppl. I LOVE NYC

I think most of the rude people in NY are really transplants who THINK they have to be rude because that is how they think native NYers behave. Silly really.

I have only ever met really nice, friendly people in New York.
