Dugongs are marine mammals that are related to the manatees. They are called sea cows because they are the only marine mammals that are completely vegetarians. The tail of a dugong resembles that of a whale or dolphin, while the manatee's is round. The dugong lives in open water is much faster swimmer than the manatee. There is one species of sea cow that is now extinct and it was the largest of the group. It was called the Steller's sea cow. The order they belong to is called Sirenia. And like the manatee they are either threatened or endangered.

Dugongs (Dugong dugon) are the smallest members of the order Sirenia (which also includes the manatees and Steller's Sea Cow). Adults are generally less than 3 meters long. The name dugong originated from the Malay language duyung meaning lady of the sea or mermaid. Dugongs can grow to 3m in length. They inhabit shallow waters in the Indo-Pacific, and feed on sea grass. They also have a long life span and slow breeding rate, which results in being susceptible to threats.

Those are basically two names for the same thing, unless they are referring specifically to a Stellar's Sea Cow. They look sort of like large seals. They have flippers instead of arms. About 8 to 13 feet in length and weigh 500 to 2,000 pounds about. They are herbivores eating kelp, seaweed, and sea vegetation mainly. They live on coastal areas of the Indian Ocean so the eastern part of Africa, Indonesia, northern Australia, coast of India, etc.

They are part of the order Sirenia... Manatees are found in the Americas, grow much larger, and have paddle-shaped tails. Dugong are found in the Pacific around Indonesia/Australia, are smaller, and have whale shaped tails (flukes).

The seacow, "manatee" is a mammal living in salt/ brackish waters in rivers and creeks on the Atlantic seaboard. They are totally vegetariums. They have a fat body and must come to the surface to breath. They give birth to a live calf. Manatees move rather slowly and get wounded and killed by boat propellers. They have whiskars, they live peacefully just browsing for vegetation. They get quite large. Here in Georgia there are signs posted to warn boaters in manatee areas to slow down to give the manatee time to get out of the way and boaters can see them better and steer out of it's path.
