There are many things the do not effect people mentally.
The need to block out some of the bad, horrible atrocities that happen so often in the world around us.

I think that people are effected mentally by things that effect them in a more personal way.
things in the city, state, jobs, children, taxes and health.

Everyone is different, we have different levels of everything, including how events affect us mentally. One person, on witnessing the murder of another could be traumatised by the event, for the remainder of his life. Whilst another could witness it, and it would have little or no impression on him at all..
