Instead of text boxes because so far the closest thing to a voice there's ever been in any Legend of Zelda game that I can think of is a few shouts grunts or gasps from link and a few other characters.

As a long time Zelda fan, I can understand your desire to hear Link speak a bit. However, Nintendo's style is to leave voice acting out of their games. I can't say for certain why this is the case, but I can give you my opinion..

1) They don't want you to associate any one particular voice/actor with their character since over time people/business relationships change. For example, three years from now Nintendo could release another game, and the voice actor they may have used in previous games might now want to do another. Then you end up with Zelda games with multiple voices for the same character. Nobody likes that.

2)It keeps development costs for the games lower. Every time you add a new feature to a game, you have to pay somebody to make it happen. Nintendo is saving quite a bit of money on their games by not paying voice actors.

I think it's what we're used to in the gaming world. Zelda doesn't have VO, but I think that's okay. I wouldn't feel like a Zelda game if I didn't tap the A button as fast as I can to get through the dialogue (only do that after I have already beaten the game and going at my second go-around). Zelda is fine the way it is. VO need not apply.

It was attempted,.. It failed so miserably noone is aware the game system exsist.

It was the first Major Game System to have CDs (before Playstsion came out). But it bombed... noone could tolerate CDs then,.. it took Playstation like 5-10 years to get popular.

I think it was by Magnevox. or something.

Added: Nope,.. I looked around,.. it was by Phillips. I knew someone with a Game System in the 90's.
