Diesel fuel has about 25% more energy potential than gasoline. Diesel engines generally have more torque, especially low rpm torque, than gasoline engines of similar size. These two factors and reliability are why diesel engines have been the choice of commercial vehicles for more than 50 years.

Technology is solving all the classic problems of diesel engines. With a reputation for being slow, smelly, dirty, noisy, expensive and cold weather intolerant, diesels are modernizing rapidly. Based upon what I saw a year ago in the UK, Europe, with France leading the way, is in the midst of a diesel motorcar revolution.

Therefore, I would say the answer to your question is: Yes!

Diesel cars used to be more cost effective, but I don't think so anymore. And if they are then it is a very minor difference. I think the prices for gas and diesel where I live is only like a 5 cent difference.

Diesel cars generally get more gas milage that normal petrol but diesel is also generally more expensive and emits more nitrous oxide, an acid rain component, and more particle emmisions(soot). So far as cost effectiveness goes, divide cost by the kilometers (or miles) per gallon to determine.

Generally a diesel automobile is a longer lived vehicle, getting better mileage from the fuel used. They can be a little quirkie in colder weather as far as starting. On the flip side, Diesel repair and maintenance is often more expensive / extensive. Gasoline is (from the engine viewpoint) generally cleaner.

if you live in a state that does emissions testing, a diesel car will never pass. so dont even bother.

i dont (kansas), so it doesnt matter for me. i think they get better gas mileage, and diesel is cheaper to buy, but they are noisy and pollute more. plus, a lot of gas stations dont have diesel, so it could be annoying to find somewhere when you need to fill up.

Yes, they are. As long as you keep the oil & gas filters changed, they'll out last & get a lot better gas than the petrol cars
