It is used to determine what kind of personality you have. Quite often it is used for career assessment in order to determine what field/profession would best fit your personality type.
I think it is effective not so much in that you will get the career of your dreams, but you will learn things about yourself that you might not have known or realized previously.

I am a woman and last I checked, I am an INTJ - the exact opposite of what I was as a child. I'm not convinced that this is a positive thing, but it is what it is none the less. It was pretty accurate when I read it.

It is also a valuable tool for hiring, or forming teams. you can find out how your team will work out.
