I am looking for the best companion animal other than a dog or cat, since I am allergic to them, and I can't afford the 4000 dollar Allerca kittens. I need an animal that has the same lovable qualities of a cat or dog. Also not something that is kept in a cage because to me that is no fun.

Actually, I know of people who keep their rats mainly uncaged, although they need supervision so that they don't get lost or hurt themselves. Also, I wouldn't say that they necessarily hate their cages - if you get a couple rats they keep each other company when you're gone, and all you've got to do is either buy a very large cage or take them out a lot. One of my rats absolutely loved coming out of the cage and would ride on my shoulder as I did things around the house, while the other rat practically had to be dragged out - she was a sweetie, but she preferred sleeping and eating to moving. Rats have qualities a little like both cats and dogs - they absolutely love people (mine would rush to the door of their cage whenever I came home, just to be petted), and they'll chase string like cats.

How about a rabbit? They can be litter trained and can make wonderful pets! They also have harnesses and leashes to take them for a walks! You will need to "rabbit proof" your house/apartment however by making sure there is nothing for the rabbit to chew on. Good Luck!

Go for a rabbit or a gunea pig both furry, they need a cage for their food , protection when your not at home and for sleeping but you can keep them out otherwise

Yeah, I think that a rabbit is the only kind of animal that can be uncaged. You could get an "un-stunked" skunk. :)
