My boyfriend and I have decided instead of buying xmas gifts for each other that we are going to go away for the weekend. We live in Maine, and want to stay in New England. We are going to to in January, and just for 2-3 days. Something romantic and inexpensive.
Any suggestions?

It all depends what you like to do. If you are in opera or Theater, check what Boston has, or Providence performance Art Center. Also the Lord of dance having USA our, with many shows in New England.
As you are in Maine, I should not suggest skiing. If you love Basketball, visit Hall of Fame, http://www.hoophall.com/.
Cape Cod, South of Boston, and Newport are always great and offer many choices, check www.nps.gov, and see the many choices.

Newport RI is always a great place to spend a weekend any time of the year. The town has every thing you could want and in a great variety of price ranges. Make sure you do ten --mile drive
Cape Cod is also an option . You should be able to easily find nice places to stay. Provincetown on the very end of the Cape is a zoo/ circus in summer but in winter it becomes a nice place to visit.
Woods Hole is a nice place to hole up for a couple of days and use as a base for exploring.
a good day trip would be taking the ferry out to Martha's Vineyard.
have fun
