In the past, I've sent her postage stamps, writing paper, envelopes, pens, etc. but she has more of that that she will ever use. I've sent her gift cards to restaurants also but she has to have a special diet now and cannot eat out like she used to. Books and magazines are out of the question also as well as DVD's, CD's, etc. Anyone got any good suggestions?

The most special gift you can give to a senior is the gift of your time and attention. Make a point to go visit each day, week whatever you can work into your schedule. It'll mean the world to her!

I've been facing this dilemma myself with my mother in law. A gift basket with some snacks that fit into her diet are nice or if she is still living on her own what we decided to do for my mother in law was to put some money on one of her bills this is good if she lives on a fixed income like most seniors do these days. If you don't feel comfortable with doing that then I would go with the gift basket.

What kind of diet is she on? You can always give a giftcard to Wallmart I mean then she can buy her own food or other things that she may need. Gas card? What is she into you have to know that then build around it. Does she like the movies? You could get her movie bucks from the theater. Does she like plays? Tickets to go see a play. I know I like clothes!! Gift card for her favorite store.

Does she get her hair done? her nails? If yes, then how about some gift certificates from her salon?

Buy her housecleaning services for a set amount of time.

Yes, your time is nice, if you don't get to see her often....

Would she enjoy a spa treatment?

Do you scrapbook? Putting together something that represents your friendship with her?

Seniors can be tough -- not because of their age -- but because at that stage in their lives, they do tend to have everything they want and/or need. I'm in the same boat with inlaws....

good luck!

Make up some gift certificates giving her some of your time. For instance you could make up a gift certificate to do a shopping trip for her, another one could be a gift certificate to a movie or a trip to the theatre or concert.

Your time. Is she lonely?

How about a day at the spa. Getting a manicure and pedicure. Getting her hair done.
