I'm female and I've travelled all round Europe and Africa on my own, without any major problems.

Just remember to keep your passport safe and don't store it in the same compartment of your bag as your wallet/cash/credit cards etc. Wearing a money belt may be a good idea.

Look confident, that's the key. Don't stop for beggers, as they might be a cover for thieves, and try not to wave a map around in dodgy areas, as that marks you out as a tourist staright away.

Other than that, enjoy yourself! Travelling on your own is great, a real experience!

It is completely understandable to be tense, especially if you're going to a country where perhaps you don't speak the language.

To ease the tension, I recommend getting as prepared as possible. Print out some maps, make sure you have hard copies of your friend's phone number and address. Look up some possible back-up options (say, a hotel) in case you can't connect. Take a map with you. Perhaps look up the tourist offices of the cities you will be visiting so you can go there for assistance. You may want to look up information about public transportation ahead of time as well.

Limit your explorations to daylight times when you are alone and get suggestions from your hosts (or from folks on here) about what areas of town to avoid.

It's realistic to be nervous, but all the times I've been nervous, the trips have always turned out great so don't lose sight of all the fun excitement ahead!

Hey,
Don't worry about it, you will do just fine and it is completely normal! The first time that i traveled abroad I too was alone! At the age of 16 I traveled to Europe all by myself to spend a year abroad as an exchange student alone! Of course it is nerve wracking but you must calm your fears... just bring a funny book or a photo album that will keep you occupied as well as an mp3 or CD player so that you don't feel quite so alone and you have some noise (other than the person sitting next to you snoring away)! That is about all the advice i can give! I hope it works and GOOD LUCK in your travels!

Totally great suggestion. Absolutely Yes. Go for it. Be pleasant and you are going to meet and occasion with essentially the most excellent humans. If you journey with any individual or in a organization you very seldom connect with and meet new humans. Being for your possess, you'll decide on precisely what you desire to do and wherein you desire to be, everyday. Island hopping in Greece is excellent amusing and rather handy - ferries from Athens. Try and spend a while in Turkey too - spectacularly lovely and pleasant. Once you are there, you'll be able to be sorry you did not plan for keep two months! Just be wary and wise too - use the identical normal-experience you might observe at residence. Also depend on your instincts - if anything or someplace feels hazardous or any individual turns out dodgy do not pass there or do not do it. (I traveled via Europe, Asia and SE Asia for seven years - normally on my possess. Did Greece two times and Turkey 4 occasions utterly on my possess.)

the only thing i can suggest that has not been said was to be open to the different cultures and be friendly and talk to different people. it is a amazing the generosity and kindness of people when you make an effort to be friendly and open. also i have been given a lot more, not necessarily respect, but indulgence as a tourist if i make an attempt to speak in the language of the country i am in, even if it is something simple as saying hello. and dont go overboard of stuff...ie drinking and partying. just uses good judgment.

all the time, like the saying goes your worst enemy is yourself, it is understandable to have butterfly in your stomach since this is your first adventure, i've been to europe twice, planning to go back again next year, europe is very friendly, generally safe, use your common sense, take care of your belongings, be alert, do not flash all your money, expensive handphone, jewelry, watches etc, etc, be careful of too helpful ppl, if you friends meet you at the airport then you should not worry, you won't be able to sleep on the eve of your departure. enjoy yourself
