Sure they can, if they purchased the equipment and gave it to you for official company business. That's one way companies can find cell phones and laptops that have been lost or stolen, and that's how they justify it legally -- their right to protect their assets and corporate secrets/practices overrides an employee's right to privacy (which is a legal fiction anyway).

With out your approval, they can not. If the equipment is owned by you. Are you in any way being paid for use of this equipment, they they still cannot alter your equipment. So I would report them to Fair Labor Reporting Act. You should have a sign and a phone number on a Poster where you work. Also there is the Better Business Bureau. Both you should be able to report without your employer finding out it was you. Are you the only one or are there others?

If it's a company owned laptop or cell phone, it's completely legal for them to add any equipment they see fit. It's their property, after all.

HAHAHA! Have you ever accidentally pressed the police button or fire depo button on your security system's key pad? I haven't but it looks so easy to accidentally do! Like if I were to play with my dog inside and throw her ball all over, it could bounce off one wall and then hit the button! And then in the next ten minutes police cars would surround my house only for me to go out there and say "Uh...yeah. Sorry about that!" That would be funny LOL.

Who owns the equipment? If it belongs to the company, they can smear peanut butter all over it if they want to. If it belongs to you, then there is a problem.

If the company owns the property they have every right to do that and they don't have to tell you about it either.
