My parents want to get me a notebook comp for X-mas to use in college. The programs I will be working with are very memory intensive, such as Photoshop, Poser, Bryce, Etc. I really want a tablet pc because I like that the tablet is built in. My budget is between $1,000-1,400 USD. I am considering Dell, Toshiba, Gateway, & HP. I need something with lots of memory and battery life, that can multi-task well. Any suggestions?

What you are asking for VS what you can afford are two different things.

What you need:

Core 2 Duo Processor (for multitasking)
Minimum 2GB RAM (Bryce & Photoshop regularly use over 1GB of memory by themselves!)
150GB or larger Hard Drive
Non-Integrated Graphics Card with a minimum of 256MB of it's own (not shared) memory.

Tablet PCs are designed for touchscreen & voice recognition applications. The extra $$$ on the pricetag come from addeing these features.

From what you tell me the apps you want to use have no need whatsoever for a Tablet PC features. Certainly you are attracted by the conveniences such a unit may offer a student, however, be advised that this is all they will be to you "conveniences".

You are compromising "bang for buck" performance if you opt for a Tablet. My advice to you is that you soend the money on a true powerhouse unit like a dual core AMD or Intel with a high end INDEPENDANT (as opposed one with shared memory) graphics adapter.

Nothing wrong with a Tablet, and many of them are quite powerful .... just understand that your money will be spent on features you will not need for any of the applications you mention.

Should you decide to go with a Tablet just the same thee is only one true innovator : Lenovo. In the past year they have re-engineered the Tablet to a new level.

The primary purpose of a Tablet is mobility. You're probably not going to find anything cheaper than $1,800. We bought a 15" Gateway Tablet that had a 2.0 GHz processor and 2GB or RAM and other add-ons and paid about $2,200 education price.

Since you're headed into Adobe land for all the packages you want to buy, you may want to consider Apple's recent holy-war they declared on Flash. Although the world uses Flash in pretty much every web context, Apple have declared it unclean. Other than that, all the packages will generally run on both platforms.

Honestly I would go with a Dell. They have awsome tech support and can build a tablet just for you. Good luck on this on. I would give them a call at the least.

I have never heard of a built in graphics tablet, but you can get a nice 4x5 Wacom tablet for under $100. Go to www.wacom.com

I have one and couldn't do graphics work without it.
