Yes charcoal does work, and is used as a filtering material quite often! However, the most common thing to use is a box of baking soda.

The best and easiest way is with baking soda. You can use it to clean the fridge with and then put an open box in fridge and freezer to keep it smelling fresh. Change the box once every month. This really works. Good Luck.

i dont know about charcoal but you can sprinkle baking soda all around in it,(when its cleaned out) leave it for a few hours and then add a little water it will make a paste and wipe out that should work great, also leave an open box of baking soda in it at all times it works great to absorb odors before they get into your food or the air in your fridge. good luck and happy clean air!

Empty it out. Wash thoroughly with warm soapy water and vinegar, as vinegar kills odors. Then put in a box of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda, you can also keep a small dish of vinegar in until the smell is completely gone. Vinegar and baking soda works great for alot of cleaning jobs.
