I already asked this question but must have put it in the wrong catogory because the people who answered did not know what they were talking about. I had a new rolled up carpet stored in the garage while I rehabed a house. Unknown to me about 2 gal of antifreeze was spilled on the floor in the garage and the carpet soaked it up. It was there about 1 month. I discoved this when we went to install the carpet. The antifreeze evaporated but left an oily feel and a bad smell of antifreeze. What is the best way to get the smell out and the oily feel off?

Antifreeze is water soluable! First test the carpet in a small unused corner for color fade with warm water and carpet cleaner. If it doesn't shrink or fade you've got it made. Unroll it on the lawn and use a rental carpet machine with carpet shampoo and warm water the first two passes. After the wash passes, do a couple of warm water rinse passes. Then do one last one with Febreeze fabric softener added to the water. This will get out any residual odor. This should do the trick. Good Luck : )

My fiance spilled antifreeze in his truck on the carpet in the floor and there was nothing he could do but throw it away because it had eat through. I would just invest in another carpet. Good Luck!
