It's mainly a hindu holiday but in mostly hindu countries like India it's celebrated as a nation-wide holiday. Sikhs also celebrate it, in India a high amount christians, muslims, sikhs, jains, hindus, and people of other religions celebrate it. It's like holi, holi's celebrated as a religious holiday out of india but in india; everyone celebrates it.

Diwali is an Indian Festival, usually celebrated by Hindus, although many others participate in the festivities as well. To put this as simply as possible: It's a festival celebrating the victory of good over bad.
Basically, there is a god, Ram, who saves a girl, Sita, from an evil 10-headed demon, Ravan.
(according to what i learned) the names are pronounced as: . Ram: r-ah-m
sita:see-ta
ravan: rah-vun
The festival is celebrated with dancing, bright colors, lots of candles and light, and firecrackers. A special religious ceremony is also performed, called a pooja, which is like a prayer.
No, HINDI is a LANGUAGE, therefore has no religious connection to the festival.
Wikipedia also may be a good source of information about this holiday.

Diwali can be celebrated by people of any race. It is basically a festival to commemorate the triumph of good versus evil, where lord krishna put a stop to the evils of Naragaswaran.
Indians all over the world will light up lamps to show that goodness has been filled in the world.
Non-Hindus can join in the celebration and commemorate, the triump of goodness.
P.S Hope these help you in your project. Good Luck ;)
