I gave my resignation to my previous employer VERBALLY on Dec. 4, 2006. I gave them WRITTEN notice the day after (Dec.5, 2006). They decided to let me go on Dec. 5, 2006. Is that legal? Aren't they supposed to let you finish working your two weeks? I thought that was harsh since the Holidays are coming up, so that leaves me in kind of a bind.

Once you have given your notice your employer can terminate you at any time. It happens all of the time in my work.

Oooohhh...I'm not sure. Do you have your written document and something from them saying a date? DO you have any witnesses...friends that work there and know you told them verbally and then in writing. Make a few calls to local (trusted, hopefully) lawyers and see what they say...
It sounds like foul play to me. Is there any reason why they would have fired you other than the fact that you put in your resignation? If you have been naughty and they have a document trail on you, they can say they were going to fire you anyway...

not illegal, but actions like that are creating a climate in today professional work place that will eventually lead to the courtesy of a two week notice being abandoned. Employers who use this tact are near sighted and not looking at the bigger picture.

It depends on the job and what you plan to do next. If are leaving one job to work for the competition they usually get rid of you asap. It also depends on the type of work you do. If it deals with a lot of inside information and you could possibly miss use it to your benefit they can. Bottom line you p*ssd someone off. Ya it's legal.

No that is not illegal. Just because you tell your company that you are leaving does not mean that they have to let you work until you say that you are going to leave. Some companies think that if you leave when you say you are leaving that you will do somethings to hurt the company while you are still working there.

Mlaw is right (as always), but did you have an employment contract? How about unused paid time off? Make sure that you receive all benefits to which you are entitled.

Yes, it is legal. If your company has a written policy that you get paid for accrued PTO for giving two weeks notice, however, you are due to be paid for that.

it sounds like they got angry with you and fired you.I think I would go to the labor board and complain..you have a right to turn in your resignation and continue to work until that time comes. If that does not work you can file for unemployment since they fired you,but you are right this is illegal

Two weeks notice is a courtesy; there is no legal obligation behind it on either side.
