The community group could be a realist organization with its creation and interests influenced by one of the mining company's competitors. Such a organization would be an underhanded yet legal technique in getting rid of the mc, but if the mc can't prove the organization as having a biased parent company, then it can only defend itself. Likewise the community group may be entirely innocent, but could be complaining over something just to get attention. Rebel without a cause groups can be found everywhere, so this really isn't too farfetched.

The mining company on the other hand could honestly believe that it's doing the community a favor by providing jobs, bringing further business, and enhancing human development. Unfortunately, advocacy groups come in once in a while trying to get more than they deserve from the prospects another venture is bringing in. Still, the mc might not have done the proper research into the community (either due to naivete or negligence) and could really be damaging the community.
