You know the ones, they send very elaborate envelopes with stickers and prize draw numbers, promising chance of real high value money prizes. How do they justify the expense, what's their return?

They are building up their mailing list by taking your name and address when you apply for the draw or whatever it is then later they will use your details to write to you and try to sell you their books and other stuff. It is a marketing exercise.

Because they are also selling high priced record, CD and book collections in the same letter, their prices for the books and records are quite a bit higher than they need to be if they weren't doing the prize draw, but also remember that the prize draw runs for many months before it is drawn. They must be making a profit or they wouldn't continue them.

I get loads of mail from them, but just put them through the shredder. Never replied to any of their letters, but still get mail saying I have won a great prize.

If I have won a great prize, why don't they just send it to me!

Its all down to building up lists of names and addresses that can be sold on to third party's.

Best to spend a pound on the lottery.

they get people to sign up for things that are expensive for what they are. And they sell you details on in mailing lists to other companies and make a lot more than they give away.

Because they end up coxing you into buying books and the like, and you're always receiving mail from them. Don't do it or you will live to regret it !
