That depends on how deep the oil pocket is located. There are places on earth where oil was actually seeping from the ground, the pocket was very shallow, so in such instance the depth was zero. Then there are oil wells that are 30000 ft deep, and surely there will be deeper ones still in the future.
If you were to drill directly beneath you feet, you might have to drill forever, as there may not be oil beneath you. The art of prospection is finding where there might be oil, and at what depth. If there is oil but it is too deep, then it is not economically or even technically possible to get to the oil.

the answer depends upon how deep the oil is where you are drilling. there are (were) places where oil was literally seeping from the ground at the surface (depth = 0). there are other places where the oil pocket is miles beneath the surface.

That's not a constant number. I the Gulf of Mexico they go down 7 miles. In other areas the oil is much cxloser to the surface, or right at the surface.
