Power stations usually produce electricity by turning turbines. In a coal or gas fired station the coal/gas is burned to heat water and produce steam, when the steam is formed the change from a liquid to a gas results in it being at a high pressure that is used to turn the turbines that produce electricity.

Fission (nuclear power) can also be used to produce heat to drive the turbines, so a nuclear power station is essentially similar just a different method of generating heat.

Simply stated, in a thermal power plant, water is heated to produce steam, using coal as fuel. The steam generated is fed into a turbine, which then generates electricity. Thus coal is the fuel input which ultimatey results in the output of electricity.

as has already been said they use the coal as fuel this then heats up water and turns it to steam. The steam is then sent through a turbine which turns and voila electricity. Its a lot more complicated than that but i do not have all day lol.

It is the fuel to give power to the station so it can produce more energy than what is put in

typically the coal is burned to heat boilers which drive the generators. Similar to how a steam locomotive operated except on a much smaller and simpler scale.
