In the old days the card was green. Today it is white with a photo of the person holding the card

It was originally green and the color became a name for the type of card. If they changed it to white card no one would know what is meant but everyone knows what a green card is. It is the same as dialing a phone. Why don't we say pushbuttoning a phone?

Well I think its because green colour is usually used for permission granted or allowed.So "green" in green card means that you may enter the country or permission is granted to reside or enter etc in that country.Thats why I believe its called a green card.(This is my guess only.)

because green is the international colour for the logo "go for it ".
for example the traffic light is green so you cross it.
a girl gives a guy the green light,means she's interested.
a green card simply gives you access to things.
at least that's the way I see it. lol :)

green stands for someone new, like a green horn, greengo, and i beleive the orignal card was green.
