CD and DVDs use a different laser and medium. They are not compatible, but many DVD players also have a laser to read CDs. In terms of storage, DVDs are much better than CDs

A CD is a laser readable disc that is able to hold up to 800mb of data files or about 70 minutes of audio files. They have been around since the early 90's.

A DVD us a newer type of laser readable disk, that while the same size as a CD, is able to hold 4.7 gig (4,700mb) of data files. They can hold 5 times as much music or about 3 hours of video.

A CD player will not read a DVD disk. However some DVD players can also read CDs.
