I'm not sure but I am doing the same thing. I am only 22 and about 3 years ago my height was 5'8" and know I am only 5'5" (these measurements are from doctors). My shoe size was a 9-1/2 and know it is only an 8. So I have the same question as you do.

I answered a question about height earlier today. The first issue is that a previous height may have been measured incorrectly or remembered incorrectly. In school people are typically measured with their sneakers on while physicians ask that the person be in socks. We are sloppy about measuring a patient's height and often just ask the person what they recall their height to be. This is because height is not as important as weight in making medical decisions. The next issue is posture. If you were not standing fully unright when you recently checked your height it will not be accurate. Next some people have kyphosis which is a curvature of the spine. These people are not able to stand fully erect so their height appears to decrease although technically it has not changed. Finally the discs between the vertebrae are high in water content. Over time we lose water content throughout our body including the discs. The loss of height seen in mature adults is typically due to this. Some people lose height due to a compression fracture of a vertebra but if this were your case you would know as it is quite painful. If it makes you feel better I was certain that my height was 5'83/4" but my nurse measured it recently and it turns out that I am 5'8".
