I'm concerned with some of the people my young children are chatting to on msn messenger. Is there a way I can log their msn sessions to make sure nothing predatory is going on? I have an administrator account and my kids are set up with limited accounts. Using win XP pro. Thanks

My kids are under 12 and as such are naive about what's out there. Maybe I'm just a paranoid parent but they hook up with loads of people they meet on runescape or habbo hotel. I don't want to restrict their freedom or invade their privacy but I do have a reponsibility to protect them...

I tell you what, some people on this website give TERRIBLE ADVICE! Ignore the lot of them!!

The answer to your question is quite simply Yes. And its likely that when you installed MSN Messenger that the option to save the message history was selected by default. Simply, log into your child's account and open up the msn messenger window. Right hand click on the contact in question and on the menu choose "View" and then "Message History".

This will show you the complete message history of the conversation that they've had...times, dates and messages.

Its as simple as that.

If for any reason there is no message history, it was obviously turned off when you first installed it. If this is the case, on the top menu bar, click "Tools" and then "Options". On the left menu of the pop up box, click "Messages" and then at the bottom of the options that appear tick the box next to "Automatically keep a history of my conversations". Click Apply and OK.

If they haven't been logged in the past they will be now.

If you aren't seeing what I'm describing, you need to upgrade to the latest version of MSN Messenger. If your kids ask why you did that, tell them its because the old one wasn't as secure and can let viruses through (which is true) and the new version has lots of cool new options.

Its no longer called "MSN Messenger", its now called "Windows Live Messenger 8.0" - microsoft decided to combine MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger. Either way, its a quick and easy install and you can get it here:

Don't apologise for checking your kids conversations, if they are pre-teen I believe its the right thing to do. When they get older just educate them as to the kind of creeps that could be out there and if they're smart (which I'm sure they are), they will be able to administer themselves. Under 12s though, I think should definitely be monitored for their own safety. Its just the way of the world.

Yes, the option is in MSN, under tools, options, messages. Three quarters of the way down the page there is a box you can check - automatically keep a history of my conversations. All conversations under that account are then kept as a text file in the location you can specify.

On a mac version go to Messenger-preferences-history and check the box that says 'Always save conversations without asking'. I would think there is an option to do the same (it may be worded differently) on windows. Mac versions are not as advanced as windows so if Macs can i'm sure you can on PC's.

There is a facility.. My dad used it on me and now im sorry i said some of the things i did over msn. Go into their account, and go into My Chat Logs.. It gives you the email address of all the people they have spoken to and what they have said.
Hope i was of help to you.

Set you online status to offline - then you will see who is online and they will think you are still offline :)
