Isn't he the main hitmaker in the band? I can't picture Michael Stipe playing a guitar, and Peter Buck is said to have just picked up a guitar upon starting the band.

Is Mike Mills the wizard behind R.E.M?

Although I consider Stipe a lyrical genius, I've always thought Mike Mills was the heart of the band.

Peter Buck is a pretty good guitar player, truly under rated...and the words are all Michael Stipe...but you are right, every band has one dude who knows music theory and arrangements, and i think that is Mike Mills...plus the vocal harmonies, which really define the early sound.

But, would they suck? I don't think so...listen to the 1st three records again ( or the IRS Years), was it Mike Mills that made those records great or was it Mike Mills that turned the later records into adult contemporary radio friendly crap? I remember them as a punk band from Athens...not the soundtrack making hit machine....either way, they will always be a band that matters.

i think it was a mixture of all of them. I dont listen to REM much anymore because of when their drummer left. They were a great band in thier day though.
