The greatest nation in the world is the one which has government by the people and for the people.
That's not the USA for sure (where it's government by the corporations and for the corporations). Nor is it the UK - which doesn't even have a written constitution and which keeps minorities fighting each other to preserve the elitist status quo.
My bets on France. A socialist country where the people are democratic and where society still exists. Easily the best country in all of Europe int terms of its quality of life. Not perfect, but perhaps the greatest nation in the world.
A British guy myself, I give the French credit for standing up to global bullies.

Well, in terms of the best place to live, according the UN, Norway comes out on top for services, education, people having high employment level etc, but it only has a small population so maybe that helps. I'm British and don't think we're the best or the USA, just that the USA dominates economically wise thus seen as the so called great, dominant power. Ireland is very nice and New Zealand is meant to be lovely. All nations have their good and bad points.

The Great in Great Britain, actually stands for LARGE rather than fantastic. In what way do we decide on the greatest nation, oh I don't know, I suppose Britain is the best of the best.
To Mike C. you are incorrect, Britain is the most popular destination for immigrants.

I am British and agree with Democracy.
I would go further and say that Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries are all countries that never get involved with the USA bully boy antics lately also taken up by my own country.
In Germany at all of the concentration camps they have signs saying that they are there to remind us not to repeat history.
What is it with the USA that they never learn? They go in everywhere to BULLY small countries. (they would not do this to Korea or even Iran I expect) then they still have to leave tail between their legs, after having been responsible for more deaths that Saddam

I go with what A Gentleman said:
Everyone claims his nation as the best.
But there is NO GREATEST NATION in the world. Each nation
has some wrongdoings on her behalf.

EGYPT!
a country that manged to survive all these years in spite of the corruption that is going on for more than two hundreds years!
A country with 72 millions with the highest world unemployment and a massive number of highly educated people who are struggling to survive. A country with a history and civilisation more than 7000 years. A country which has been stolen by the Ottoman empire, the French (Napoleon), the English and finally Mubarak and his family and still going on!

The UK...especially England...except when it comes to Cricket, by the looks of things :-(
Everyone thinks their country is great and I have been to some great countries. A bit of National pride is not a bad thing but when it gets out of hand it becomes ugly. The BNP and other similiar nationalist or neo-nazies all claim to have pride their country but they are all just w**kers.

It depends on how you measure a nations greatness!
USA would be the greatest in terms of economy and military power. China and Egypt would get a nod for great wonders, culture, and overall age. It depends on how you measure, no doubt.
