My friend Matt just got a divorce from his wife and is feeling really down. I invited him to come to our christmas b/c i didn't want him to be alone. I want to give him something to show him that I care about him. But I don't want him to think that im trying to hook up with him. I just need something to get for him that says "hey, I'm here for ya. I love ya it's gonna be alright" Any ideas?

Your question is vague but the details are clear although I see you are truly confused so my best answer would be

Just hanging out, calling once and a while will show you care for him and so far I see nothing wrong with what you have done to show him some respected love.

Rather than giving him a gift, just make sure that you are there for him to talk to and the fact that you have invited him around for Christmas is a kind gesture in itself.

It's hard to know exactly what you could give, unless you give him the usually presents and you could give him a voucher home made and on it say something along the lines of this is a friendship voucher with my number and my address on it and I want you to know that whenever you need someone to talk to, to cheer you up or someone just to hang out with, I'm here for you, or something like that. (It may sound corny, but I think that its nice way of letting someone know that you care)
