My first car was an old style Fiat Panda and now I drive a Peugeot 206 which is lovely! I would recommend getting a different car to the one you have passed your test in. As for insurance Diamond did a good deal for me!
Look into the insurance before you decide on the type of car or go out armed with a list of possibles.

I'm a first time driver aswell, and I got a Fiat Seicento. They're very good for first time drivers. If you want to spend a little less € then you could always opt for its predessecor, the Fiat Cinquecento.
Here's some info on the car..

Seems to me that KNOWALL knows f*ck all, Ireland is a nation of potential driving champions. Anyway, the Toyota Yaris is a great car, not my cup of tea, but reliable all the same.

Anything Japanese - Toyota Yaris, Nissan Micra, Suzuki Swift. All of these are cheap to run and reliable. Also come with good safety kit.
