I've met some scottish and irish people in my time, and they hate us! Because of something that happened yonks ago! They can't seriously be mad because I live on a certain part of land and have a different language. What did I ever do to them? What did the rest of England ever do to them? I admit, we had some evil kings and queens that started battles and such, but just cause we won doesn't mean you have to call us names. I think countries that hate other countries because of history should just get over themselves.

It seems to be more socially acceptable for the Irish, Welsh and Scots to be insulting about the English than the English to be rude about them (although it certainly happens). This culture can only be bad for a society with all these groups living in close proximity; if in order to go 'too far' in ones 'joking' and mocking of the English you need to say or do worse things than if you were mocking someone else, say Nigerians or Polish people.

I think it is entirely possible that the Uk and Ireland could become a Balkans of Northern Europe, with the old animosities between the countries being used to gain wealth and power at the expense of innocent people.

I was told in a bar in Wales once that if the country ever gained independence 'it wouldnt be long before cattle trucks full of the English would be seen'. This upset me a great deal.

I think that some of the dislike (hate is possibly to strong) is nothing to do with what happened 'yonks ago', but because they perceive that the English still think they are superior and that the Scots and Irish (and Welsh, come to that) are are still lesser partners in what has been described as the 'Anglo-Saxon Empire' They feel that their countries are dominated by England and that they should be completely independent. Personally I, as an Englishman, would love to be free of the Scots - Blair, Brown, Reid etc. I think it is a nonsense for the Scots to have a measure of independence, yet we English have none and are effectively ruled by Scots

True and yet there are many other variables that impact such xenophobia!! People may hate another country because of economic supremacy or its ability or even inability for good governance, they may hate you as an individual (some rash deeds or comments) but since the individual is out of scope it transits that feeling of helplesness to hate for the entire community you represnt. The best antidote is smile and tell them you will stand by them when they are hurt (individually or as a community) and they will repsond!!. That means every time someone in your country voices a negative against a scottish or irish person..go ahead and voice a positive LOUDLY!! someone will hear and lower the effect of the bad vibes!!

Well, what the English did was to impose law on Irish and Scottish peoples to prevent them from owning anything of consequence or bequeathing entire estates to one child, preventing the amassing of wealth. Also, religious persecution. That's why my folks (Americans) hauled *** to a new place.

It takes a long time for people to forgive and forget, especially when the perpetrators were pompously in the right about what they did. Blacks/Whites still don't get along here the way one would think they should after a few hundred years.

i like to think that there hatred is born more of fun than actual hatred. i agree with you and i consider myself British before English, and although they call us i like to believe they would support us if we needed it as i like to think we would them
