You don't need to see the new Star Wars to have known that Anakin joined the Dark Side and became Darth Vader. That was already explained in the original trilogy. The prequels simply explain why he joined the Dark Side.

he slowly starts going to the dark side in the movie because of the advise the future emperor gives him making think he can stop people from dying and do things that would make him almost impossible to defeat with the power from the dark side
so yeah anakin joins the dark side by the middle of the movie

Well have you seen the old ones??...Because the new ones are prequals to the old ones...and Anikan is Darth Vador. In addition, if you haven't seen the old ones you should definately watch them first...I don't know why because you would think you should watch them in chronological order but it just seems right.
