In the area of the US where I live, many people are descendants of European immigrants. So I am assuming that this practice originated here in the US. I understand now, the youth in Europe are more modern and do shave more now than previously. Just curious, not interested in starting any controversy.

I know that when Hernando DeSoto came to what is now the Southeastern US during the 1500s, it was the custom for many Native groups to get rid of any body hair. The same went for those in the area now called New England. That and bathing every day are indigenous habits, and they likely carried over to the modern day. In fact, when DeSoto's people came in, many of the principal chiefs of tribal towns wouldn't talk with them because they smelled and requested that they bathe first.
