Check out your local goodwill store, which can be found at http://ww.goodwill.com. Also, go to thrift stores. Sometimes, rich people donate items because they want to redecorate, and you end up getting a good deal. I got a couch with a Queen sofa bed and 2 rocker/swivel chairs, all in like-new condition for $150 for my basement. Ebay has a lot of furniture too. Just go to advanced search to click the box "within 200 miles (or whatever) of your zip." Check under "Furniture" in the classifieds in your paper.

If you can wait a while and you have a college or university in the area then you can often get free furniture when the students move out at the end of the semester. Generally there is a lot available in May/June, not so much in December...

Try Freecycle. Go to Yahoo.com. Click "Groups". In the Search area, type in Freecycle and the City, State you live in. If you have one in your area, it will show up. It is simple, you join the group and then you can post for items that you are giving away or want. Everything is free.
