The government can choose (during times of war) to keep the soldiers there/extend there contract against their will.

After 4 years they can come back but are on call up for another 4 years. I know back in the 80's my brother served his military time and got our after 4 years and then for the next 5 years he was on call. If a war were to come up within those next 5 years he could have been called to serve again. It's all written out when you enlist so you know this before you decide to go in.

the government can decide to extend their tour of duty, but every army guy i've known has always decided to stay in after the first 4 years. its about the 3rd or 4th tour when they have all decided enough is enough.

When you join the army you have to sign a contract. One of the things that contract basically states how long you are going to be in the army.
