It used to be that she had to be royal & a virgin. Then, I believe, a widow became fair 'game.' But I don't think Lady Di was royal - even though she came from stock of the peerage, so that must have been loosened. Is being a virgin the only definitive criteria now?

Brititsh royals have to marry over the age of 25 and must marry a virgin. They can not marry Catholics. They don't have to marry royals.

Some have said Lady Diana was the daughter of a Duke. Wrong her father was an earl. Earl Spencer. Diana family home Althorps estate was next to the royal estate. If fact Prince William still has to has his grandmother the Queen permission if he can marry someone. Well the future bride can't be a UN married mother, or divorced person. Or have an unsuitable background

You don't have to be a virgin to make sure (if you as a femaile marry him) he stays in line, so far the only rule is that he can't marry a non Catholic, however, I'm sure that will become debatable if he ever dates or gets serious with a Catholic girl. It used to be until recently you had to be an unmarried, nondivorcee, nonwidowed nonCatholic but with Prince Charles' recent marriage to a divorcee being legalized so he can stay in line, it may come up in the near or far future about the nonCatholic rule.

Of course the laws were a lot stricter in the older days but little by little they loosened them. There's actually no law against him marrying a commoner, but old laws and customs and the old taboo may prevale.

Diana was a Lady. I think her father was a Duke. Who cares I just hope that William can marry for love. William has a long time girlfriend but I don't know if she has any royal blood. As handsome as William is I doubt she is a virgin.

Lady Di was related to the Royals, her father was a distant cousin to the Queen otherwise she would'nt have been able to have the title of Princess.Camilla is married to Prince Charles and she has'nt got the same privilage. If William marries and she is a commoner she might be made a Duchess or Lady, but she'll never get Princess or Queen,if he becomes King.

Too bad...You are all killing my hopes of someday marrying Prince William....Dream killers!!! hahah
It is weird to me that people still live like this with such strict rules. Especially when it comes to love. That has to be very hard to live with the kind of pressure that they do. I cant imagine.
Hopefully he will be able to marry for love and be happy for a long time. Everyone deserves that chance. : )

Any woman who would submit to a gynecological exam to prove she's a virgin in this day and age is nuts. Diana did it to marry Charles while he was rolling around in the sheets with his married lover, Camilla. England sure has two sets of rules - one for the men and one for the women.

He may have to give up his claim to the throne to do it, but he can marry anyone he dang well pleases. It's happened before.
