...the United States should never get involved in a war in the Middle East - it's a war we cannot win.

Why did we do this? Why are we involved over there? Does our leadership not realize that these sects have been fighting each other for more than a thousand years? What could we as such a young, mixed up country do to make the Middle East change their ways? NOTHING! We are in a war that we cannot win (a war on terror? I mean, c'mon, what is that?) against an enemy we cannot see, and who will fight to the last man, woman, and child to defeat us - what was the Bush administration thinking?

Now, we can't simply pull out - we've made a mess and we need to try to clean it up! But, the body count continues to rise, we've helped to start a civil war, and the balance of power in the Middle East is crumbling before our very eyes. So, was Sadam really that bad? Did he really pose that big a threat to our national security? Where are we now? Worse off, or better?

Your grandfather knew his stuff. As to the Sadam question, that is hard to say. I vote that he was 'bad' (there's not much doubt that he was responsible for a lot of atrocities). But, things seemed more stable, overall, while he was still in power. However, I think it would only have been a matter of time before it would have melted down anyway... rule by fear just doesn't work forever. Dictators always create their own enemies and eventual destroyers... (want a laugh?- that's a paraphrase of what Dumbledore said in a Harry Potter book... but I believe it.)

Oh yeah, where are we now? I'm often reminded of VietNam... another 'un-success' story...

600,000 people died every year under Saddam. We have saved the lives of many but you are correct the Muslims religion is a deadly one and they wont stop the killing. We need to back out to camps away from major population and minimize our presents and leave this at the end of the year. We also should insist on dividing up the country into four different states to keep the religious factions apart. But no mater what we can not make this look like we are cutting and running. The Dem's did it in Vietnam and many died for such foolish actions. Osama was also turned on by this It was his sign that the US would do nothing if he attached our interests around the world. Lets learn from our mistakes.

You have beaten the Iraq army forces when there was no civil war, now that they are fighting themselves, it is much easier.
If Saddam was still in power, you would have to wait for the oil to run out, then someone would overthrow Saddam, then civil war, then democracy. As you see, it is better now that the Iraqis will have a chance of getting a democracy before the oil runs out, which will help their development a lot.

The best thing for the US to do now is to withdraw from Iraq. And no, Saddam was not bad, in comparison with other ME rullers. And the US should leave the rest of the world in peace.
