A discussion bcomes an argument when people start feeling and acting defensive about their position, point etc instead of just defending it. There is a real difference between the two. You can defends something without feeling emotionally involved. If you feel defensive you already have invested your emotions quite heavily whether you are aware of it or not.The latter accepts someone else has a different point of view, beliefs or version of events. The former doesn't want to or refuses to acknowledge this happening. When this happens they tend to stop listening carefully to what the other person or persons are saying. They inevitably become angry (sometimes furious) and/or abusive. You don't actually have to raise your voice but of course that very often does happen if not worse.
There are as many reasons and occasions to have an argument as there are people in the world, maybe quite a few more.
Maybe your question might start one, who knows???

Discussion is the ventilation of a question. Argument is fact advanced for the purpose of influencing the mind. So pick the bones out of that.

As long as there are views on either side of the topic, a discussion is always an argument.

I guess it's when both parties stop listening to the other's point of view and start to raise their voices.
From there bad feelings emerge because each person feels they are being treated like they're in the wrong and being ignored.

When people stop seeing and listening to the other person's point of view and instead are more focused on enforcing their own.

When one side refuses to see the other side as having the right to be expressed. When one side refuses to see that the other side might be possible, plausible, or right in any way shape or form. When one side closes their mind.
