I have just got my son on a regular schedule of solid foods, he has cereal and fruit in the morning, a veggie and fruit for lunch, a veggie and fruit for dinner, and some cereal before bed. The problem is that he now has no interest in nursing during the day, he will nurse right when he wakes up in the morning, after he has his cereal at night, and he also wakes up several times in the night to nurse (he has been doing this since he was born, it's not anything new). I've tried to give him formula in a sippy cup during the day, because he WILL NOT take a bottle, but he hates the taste of it and spits it right out. From what I have been told he should still be getting all of his nutrients from breastmilk, is that correct? And if so, what should I do to make him nurse more often, he absolutely loves his solid foods gets so excited when I'm getting them ready for him, I would hate to stop feeding them to him, but if I have to for his health then obviously I would.

Has anyone else gone through this? What did you do, or did you do anything?

He shouldn't be getting ALL his nutrients from breastmilk. That's why you have to give solids because they need extra. I think everything is fine as long as he is still nursing in which you said he still was. My son doesn't take as many bottles now that he is on solids either. What you are doing now is fine. And if you have a real concern then call your doctor but I think everything is good the way it is.

If he is still making wet diapers and only skipping his midday and afternoon feedings it sounds like he is staying hydrated. If you are feeding him juice, that might be quenching his thirst. If you are worried about him staying hydrated and are not doing juice yet, introduce pears and then let him have an ounce or 2 of pear juice mixed with = parts water. It might just be that he is so excited about solids that he just distracted from the same old thing he's had from birth. Once the new has worn off of solids he will probably add those missing feedings back in.

My daughter took my pumped milk in bottles at daycare for the first 14 months. I didn't let her have juice unless she had firm poops because I wanted her fluids to come from breastmilk, and I didn't want her to fill up on juice before she could get to the milk. There was a time after she had gotten good at solids and had been introduced to several different foods that a full bottle would be sent back home with her. A month or so later things had gotten back to normal.

you may be getting a little emotional about him not nursing quite as much. That sadness for not being your baby's primary source of nourishment may be getting turned into a concern that he isn't getting enough nourishment...since it's not from you.

i had to deal with a similar thing just recently. i went back to work, so my 2 1/2 month little bean started day care. i started weaning him off nursing and introduced formula. he is doing really well and growing like crazy, but i found i was sad b/c i was missing our nursing time together. there's something really special about being your baby's sole provider of nourishment.

hang in there and i'm sure he's fine:)

as long as he is still nursing in the morning and throughout the night, then i wouldn't worry too much about it.
also, as long as he is growing properly, then i'm sure he is fine.
babies have a really good way of knowing what they want and what they need and how much they need.

have you tried pumping and putting breastmilk in a sippy cup??

take care and i'm sure things will work out. remember, he is getting a lot of nutrition from his solids, too!!!

He is filling up on too much solid foods during the day.

Yes, most of his nutrients should be comming from breast milk . cut back on the foods a little. At this age they should not replace breast milk or formula. solid foods are extra.

Some babies also go on nursing strikes from time to time.
just pump and offer it to him in a bottle or sippy cup till he comes back to the breast.

Some breast fed babies will not take formula.
Taste it, you will understand why.

You should definitely pump your milk and put it in a sippy cup. It doesn't matter how it gets in him as long as it does. I think that he's nursing enough now. You shouldn't worry about him nursing during the day when he is nursing all through the night, in the morning and before going to bed.

My son stopped nursing at 4 months.

He was eating solids. He had no ill effects. He has had no weight problems, no allergies.

Use a breast pump during they day to give to your son, especially since he doesn't like formula, this will keep your milk production going. Other then that if he is happy, healthy and gaining weight, don't worry.

my problem wasnt that he wouldnt eat breastmilk....my supply started drying up on its own when he was 3 mnths old, even when i was pumping to try and produce more...it just wouldnt. so at 3 1/2 mnths, i had to give him formula...i was only producing by then 2 ounces of breastmilk. He didnt like the taste of regular formula and would literally projectile vomit after eating it. not only that..he would go 3-4 days with no bowel movement. as soon as i started him on soy formula....the first time he tasted it he gobbled it down with no vomit afterwards. and he had 4-5 bowel movements the first day on soy. after talking to my Dr. and telling him what i did....he said it was a great choice...just remember, its not always good for another whats good for one though, so talk to your Dr. about it. my Dr. also told me that he should be ok since he had breastmilk for at least the first 3 mnths of his life. he's now 9 mnths and this is the first he's gotten sick. good luck with what you decide...and i'm sure he'll be ok!!!

My daugther weaned herself at 6 months old. She would drink breastmilk in bottle at daycare and the switched to Formula. After swapping between the two. Since he is all into his solids now. He has gotten the benefits from you.

Don't be the lady with a 2 year old attacted to your breast.

If he doesn't like the formula then use a breast pump and fill the bottles with your milk.
