well, I'll guess to show my age here, and maybe this question would be more appropriate for entertainment section, but to cut a rug with someone was typically used when two parties danced on a dance floor, more often used in jazz and swing dance, the term "cut a rug" was also popular in the late fifties nd early sixties, buddy holly era.
