Well why not loose the plot slightly? I have a few fairy lights in my front window but you wouldn't catch me hauling a massive great illuminated plastic santa onto my front lawn for all to see. However, I do appreciate looking at all the crazily decorated houses as I drive past. I think it really brightens everywhere up and that exactly what we need at this time of year when it gets dark about half 3 in the afternoon! Also, a lot of the really decorated houses do it for charity.

I think that people have lost the plot generally, this type of competition occurs all year round with better cars, computers,TVs even gardens to compete with. The" mines better than yours brigade" are always about it's just that the consumerism of Christmas shows them up like fairy lights around a Xmas tree.

I was in my local shopping centre the other day and just looked at people ... stampeding like panicked animals, pulling along hyperactive kids. There's a madness at Christmas time which is all to do with not enough time to do things, having to out-do everyone else and putting too much food on the table for people to stuff themselves with and have arguments after lunch. It was mostly the women who were running around like headless chickens.

You have to go to the chavvy areas to see the best displays. You're right, it is getting worse year by year. I blame the Americans - all their front lawns have had nodding reindeer etc. for years.
Have a look at this beauty: http://www.argos.co.uk/ProductDisplayTRK019?partNumber=2696900
But then, it's a waste of time trying to be tasteful at Christmas - 'tis the season to be tacky.
I bet the Queen's got a few of these. They do an awesome 5ft inflatable snowglobe, too.

Yeah I think it is fine to decorate and make things special over the hols. But I do agree, some people take it too far.
I bloody hate foil decorations and cheap crappy stuff.
I am lucky that my family all keep their heads at xmas, we try to stay calm, spend resonable amounts of money and stay out of the crowds. let everyone else get stressed and skint, i'll b watching Nightmare b4 xmas and drinking some baileys : ) !!!

Yes, I believe a lot of people have lost the plot. My family is not close at all. I have cousins whom I have not seen for years. I have tried over the years to make contact. With all of the hustle and bustle people have lost contact with what made holidays special.

It's has become a comercial farce. The decorations are bad enough but having to listen to the same christmas songs everytime I go anywhere near a shop for a month is begining to get me down.

I think the world has gone stark raving mad anyway. Just ignore it. It's only one day. I feel sorry for the plastic santa brigade but, when you think about it, it is harmless I suppose.

Yes, many people seem to have a taste bypass operation.
Regarding Christmas decoration, less is more, definately.
