Depends on what you mean by successful (been around the longest, most hits, most awards, still together?), I would have to say Rolling Stones or U2.

As a band I think you could argue U2. They have a ton of influence and they seem to be putting out a ton of songs that are just doing well. Most resently The Saints are coming with Greenday.

Hmmmmm....... well U2 is Irish and The Rolling Stones are British. So I'm actually not sure.
