there are really only four strokes. Do not get confused with some made up strokes like doggy Patel.
the basic strokes are butterfly backstroke breaststroke freestyle.
Butterfly-is an interesting stroke. Your kick is like a dolphin, or as most people know, the worm. While you are squirming like a worm, you launch your self up from the water, and skim your arms on the surface of the water.
Back stroke- is where you lay on your back, kick hard and use your arms like a kayak, rotating your body from one side to another.
Brestoke-is a frog like stroke. To make it short, youkichck like a frog, hold it in a stream line position for 2 full good seconds. Next you pull your arms like your searching through the wilderness and repeat the steps.
Freestyle is very similar to back stoke but inn your belly, again using your arms like a kayak rotating side to side.

Yes, speaking as another skinny male with a fast metabolism, you will gain muscle. You'll gain it in the areas that really matter in the male form: your back, lats and shoulders. This will develop a V shape to your body, as well as fill out the rest of your muscles (chest, arms, legs). No, swimming doesn't extensively work the vain bicep, but it does grow you in a perfectly proportioned way. Just check out photos of swimmers, male and female. Even the women have strong shoulders and a V shaped upper body (which by the way is an excellent design for the female form), and that's without the aid of the testosterone levels of a 19 year-old male. Don't forget the aerobic benefits. Your endurance will increase in everything you do, whether bicycling, running, sex...

Butterfly
Backstroke
Breaststroke
Freestyle
Butterfly, Backstroke and Breaststroke have 50m, 100m and 200m events.
Freestyle has 50, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m events.
A combination of all the strokes is called an individual medley (IM), and this has 200m and 400m events, and occasionally 100m events in Short Course. The IM is swum with Fly first, Back next, Brst third and Free last.
In a medley relay, however, the strokes are swum in alphabetical order (Back, Brst, Fly, Free)

Four competitive - front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly. Any of these can be considered freestyle - most think of front crawl. A combination - fly, back, breast, free - is the IM (individual medley). Lifesaving includes approach stroke - either front crawl or breast. There is an antiquated stroke, I believe called trojan - a combination of front crawl and breast - no longer used.
