Soccer is a game of practice and repetition. The best way to become better is to work with the soccer ball and develop your skills. If you are just starting, just work on kicking around the ball, flipping it around, juggling it - get used to the ball. What you want to do is develop your "touch." That is, you want to be able to know what the ball will do when you kick it, need to know how it will respond. You will learn where to place your foot on the ball so as to get it to do what you want it to do.
After you get familiar with the ball playing by yourself, start kicking it around with other people developing your passing. Then games will start to develop your speed and ability to respond to the game.
Soccer is a beautiful game. The way to get good is to practice on your own and then get out and get a bunch of "real world" experience in live action.

It depends how old you are, strenght, size, and what position you want to play. If your young do lots of gymnastics, it sounds girly but it will help in the long run. If you are a high school kid hit the weight room 5 days a week and be serious. Study the game, understand the situations, feel the play before it happens. Doing these things properly will allow people to acheive their full potential.

I believe it is mostly hard work. I'll site an example related to American football but it is 100% applicable to any sport. Jerry Rice the greatest wide receiver in the history of the American football use to work out in grueling very difficult workouts regulary. He would sprint up hills over and over again. Other players would come to work out with him and would be amazed at how difficult his work out was.
So practice hard and often. I really think in any sport it is who wants it the most and practices the hardest. I mean pushing yourself all the time.
