xbox 360 is the better choice for many reasons. first games out for both systems look better on the 360 (just look at call of duty 3). then it is cheaper and has a whole bunch of new games and old ones that are fun and haev great graphics. Xbox live awsome and cant be matched by any other onine service. Halo 3, Forzamotorsport, mass effect, and bioshock are to look forward into and Gears of War, Rainbow Six Las Vegas and Oblivion are already here.

First. Games. Microsoft has been picking up all the rookies with a lot of potential while Sony has stuck with it's companies that have made great games in the past but are old and need to retire. The most relevant example is SqaureEnix. They made some of the greatest games ever, but they can't keep up with the younger generation's needs and wants and will suffer dearly for their inability to keep up. Sony will be plagued by this in the future and Microsoft will pull ahead as it's picking up the younger, more fresh players while Nintendo will continue making kids games and games that are "fun," which will keep them in the race as much if not more than Sony.
Second. Reliability. Ps2 had more problems than any fan would admit. Ps3 has be enduring many, many problems in it's first few weeks of release. Granted 360 had a number of problems in it's initial release, Ps3 still should look better than this.
Third. Capabilities. On a scale of 1-10 for total game graphics, sound and playability, the consoles rate as fallows. Wii 5-6. Xbox 360 8. Ps3 8.5-9. They're really isn't much difference between the 360 and the Ps3. Xbox has a rich online community that Ps3 will have to copy to keep up. Wii's online allows downloads of old NES and some Sega games. Plans for Nintendo 64 games are in the works for download able content.
Ps3 has Blu-ray and if you believe that's the future of DVD then you'd be better off buying a Ps3 than a Blu-ray player as the Ps3 is about $200-$1000 cheaper than a player.
360 has a HD-Drive that you can purchase for $200 and if you believe HD-DVD is the future then there you go.
Wii has no DVD support.
Wii is the cheapest system and it would be "fun." Nintendo has always been a parent friendly system and is great for younger kids.
Ps3 is the most expensive system($599 for the top system,) and would be good as a Blu-ray player.(If you want to argue the hard drive, you can buy a USB drive for XBOX and have more space than Ps3 and still be cheaper.)
360 is the ladder and has a much better set up over Sony and Nintendo. Games are great and you can expect a lot of exclusive games from 360 in 2007.
Get a 360.

First off, I must forewarn you that this topic will attract many people who will praise one system and bash another; ignore them.
The first question you should ask yourself is what kind of entertainment system you have. If you have a TV that is high definition but can only display 1080i (without 720p), do not a a PS3 as it is incompatable with that TV type. If you have a standard definiton TV, both will look the same on it. If you have a TV that can display 1080p, the PS3 is probally a better chioce if clarity is the most important faxtor for you. What kind of sound system do you have? If you are playing on stereo sound or a surround sound system that supports up to Dolby Digital 5.1, the 360 is a better choice. If you have an awsome 7.1 surround sound system, the PS3 is a better choice due to its support of 7.1 surround sound.
I do not recommend the HDDVD attachment for the 360 or buying Blu-Ray movies for the PS3, as both will make you take a side in the next generation format wars. Think back to the VHS vs Beta war, if you picked the wrong system format, you wasted all your money for a useless system.
I do not recommend buying either system if HD movies is what you are after; electronic distribution of high definiton films on the internet is only a few years away. A new format is not needed now with the solution to formats just years away. I have also heard of blu-ray diodes taking damage from reading disks and lowering thier lifetimes, so if you buy a PS3 I strongly suggest you do not watch Blu-Ray movies on it; this may cause the system's lifetime to shorten (it has not been confirmed, but the professional reporting on this was educated on the subject.)
If gaming is what you are after, as I imagine you are, it depends on your preference. If you are a big fan of Japenese RPGs, such as Final Fantasy, the PS3 would be a better choice for a system as it usally has many japanese oriented games. The PS3 also has motion sensing in its controler, but no vibration. If you enjoy shooter's and all related shooting genres, the 360 is right for you as many of its games are aimed at western audiences (shooters and action games.) The 360 has no motion sensing but has vibration in its controllers. This is just speculation from the last generation though, I cannot say what will happen to the games on each console this generation; but at least some of the trends in game types will continue.
If the world was going to end at the end of this year, buy a 360. It has a much better game selection at the moment, and many cross system games are running better on it. The PS3 is hardware is insanely powerful, or so Sony says; the company promises that in the future (a few years) the quality gap between the systems will become significant. This should be taken with a grain of salt, as Sony promised an incrediably powerful console on paper in the last generation, but the numbers they produced for the system did not work in real life. Microsoft has claimed that the DVD drive on the 360 will not become outdated this generation, but these claims should also be taken with a grain of salt.
Basically, it is too early in this console race to tell which console is the best purchase. By the end of 2007 the best console will become apparent from the contenders. If you must play a new console this year; I would recomend the 360 due to its availability and wide selecton of games compared to the PS3's launch titles. It will be imposible to find a PS3 this year anyways. If money is important, get a 360; the PS3 has no games worth its $600-$2000 (on ebay) price point...yet.
Don't forget about the Wii either, if you like motion sensing or Zelda games you may enjoy it this year. Its hard to find, but not as hard to find as a PS3, and at $250 dollars is more affordable than the other two consoles, although it does not support high definition.

I would recommend getting the PS3, once February rolls around. By then they will have more games, as well as they will actually be available! The Xbox 360 is nice, too, but if you don't want to play lots of M games, PS3. The PS3 online service is also free, unlike Xbox Live. The graphics are better on PS3, especially if u have a High-def TV. But there are not many games for PS3, yet. I would recommend, if u have the $$, getting the Xbox 360 now, and the PS3 later (I am hoping to do that).
P.S. CNet has a comparison of the three that is VERY enlightening.
P.P.S. I have noticed that many other answers are biased towards Xbox 360 or PS3, i have tried to be fair to both

I'm in a similar situation to Celeb B and I personally am going to get the Xbox 360. Its got games such as Perfect Dark Zero, and theres a new Halo game coming out on it. I don't really back PS3 as Playstation was never the games console I was most into, most of the games that I played on those machines I was able to play on other consoles or my PC. I understand though that the PS3 has higher specs than the Wii and 360 but the cost of it has deterred me. I'm hearing its close to £500 which is definately out of my price range for a games console. If the Nintendo Wii is going to be only £180 then I could get that and the Xbox 360 for a comparable price.

The Xbox 360. Why? Because all games for the Xbox 360 are in high-definition and the graphics are pretty much the same as the PS3. There's built-in support for wireless controllers and excellent online gaming, content downloads, and communications via Xbox Live. The console is not only backward compatible with many (but not all) original Xbox titles, but it also doubles as a superior digital media hub and Windows Media extender. The system's online Marketplace allows easy purchases of mini-games, movies, and TV shows. The Xbox 360 delivers the power and performance of a high-end gaming PC, including impressive digital media and networking features.

Go with the 360...
you can get the premium system with everything for 499... that's the instore price for the low end PS3... and you can't get them in stores right now... i sold one on ebay for 715.
plus, the Xbox is a more advanced system with better graphics and more games.
(Actually I would reccomend a Wii)
