A thesis statement is the statement that begins a formal essay or argument, or that describes the central argument of an academic paper or proposition.

It is the basic idea that a paper is written about.

For example, if you were writting a paper about why the Hulk is more popular than the Thing from the Fantastic Four. That would be the thesis for the paper. Then as I believe someone else already pointed out the first few paragraphs of your paper would be used to state your thesis in detail and then the rest of the paper would be written to support your thesis.

Depends on what kind of thesis you mean. In High school a senior thesis is often a capstone to your high school English classes that is your first intro to research (typically 10-20 pages). In college A Thesis is the Capstone to your Masters work (the degree you earn after your bachelors) It's a small book of original research that shows that you have mastered the skills of your discipline and can use them to do good research work (In my University and Field it was about 300 pages). For your Doctoral it is called a Dissertation and is a real book comprising several years of research and writing. I have seen these range in size from 300 pages to several Volumes like 16 volumes for a History Dissertation. The Doctoral is not only good research but adds to the body of knowledge of your discipline.

Oh my. You should've used an online dictionary dear.

Mr. Webster said it is :
4 : a dissertation embodying results of original research and especially substantiating a specific view; especially : one written by a candidate for an academic degree
