your friend may not know he/she's got a virus
there is a virus that attaches itself to someone's address book and automatically sends out emails to everyone on that contact list - though I can't remember the name of that virus -
you may want to email your friend and let them know that the email they sent you has a virus and that they should email everyone on his/her list to alert them of that certain email
and always have your emails scanned before opening them - if you're using Outlook Express or any other similar email program
yahoo and hotmail are good emails to sign up for - as they both have updated email virus protection

It is important to understand that the person on the sent-from tag may not have been the person sending you the virus.
Usually, modern viruses spoof this address field so that detection of the infected machine is delayed, allowing more time for the virus spreading. They usually use other addresses in the address book of the infected machine.
Also, though this may be obvious to most, the virus was likely sent to you by the action of an infected machine, not a person at that machine. The person who initially created and sent the virus is likely many, many times removed from the person.

He may not be aware that he did. Let him know he has a virus and get him to clean his computers. That's how many viruses work they take over the computers mail list and send themselves to everyone on the list. NOW, make sure you are not infected otherwise you are doing the same to everyone on your email list.

You may want to email him to inform him of said virus. It is possible that he may not know that it exists.
There is also a chance that someone else has this virus, and his email is just being spoofed or faked.

I suggest you download AOL Active Virus Shield, It's based on the popular Kaspersky Lab Virus Killer. It's a great antispyware and virus killer all in one.
There's links and also a great walkthrough with a step by step guide: http://walkthroughwizard.info/
