I was on an island up on Lake Erie and it was around 11pm and quite dark. I saw a little flashing light a little off the road. It could have been a firefly, but it was 1) too late in the night for fireflies and 2) the light was white, not yellow. Then I thought it might be a keychain or something that flashed that someone threw off the side of the road. Then it started moving. The light floated up higher and even went over my head, flashing all the way. It was so dark I couldn't see anything but the light. I eventually lost sight of it. What was that? Keep in mind this light was about the size of a firefly.

This isn't as romantic as the other answers, but it could have been a floater (a clump of visible material within the vitreous of the eye). They can look like shadows or flashing lights.

Sometimes floaters occur because your eye is irritated, or because there are crystal-like deposits in the vitreous.

Or it could have been a pixie.
