Africans were taken as slaves since the time of the Greeks and Romans. Some wealthy Arabs kept black slaves from the early Middle Ages until the 20th century: as late as 1953. The European slave trade began in the late 1400s when the Portuguese colonised Angola and Congo. They bought prisoners taken by the local tribes. These were usually men as the women were taken by the chief as wives. This continued in the 16th and 17th centuries. After the New World was discovered Africans were taken to work the plantations. This barbaric institution ended in Europe in 1807, America in 1865 and Brazil in 1888 but continues in parts of Africa including Sudan.

The Egyptians had a slave trade over 4,000 years ago. The European exploitation of Africa began to boom in the 16th century.

Probably with the Egyptians or the Romans. Both were known for both enslaving parts of populations they conquered and for buying slaves from African and other nations. African tribes have been selling rival and captured enemy tribesmen into slavery for as long as recorded history. I believe they still do on a more limited scale.
