The mariners of old times used knotted ropes to measure the speed of a moving ship.

The knots are tied at a regular interval with one end tied to a log & thrown over the stern. As the ship moves, more of the rope is released & the speed is determined by the number of knots on the released rope. Hence, "knot" is used as a measurement of a ship's speed.
