Monthesquieu created a framework for dividing the powers of government between an executive and a legislative branch.

There is enough here to connect the dots if you do the research. Just consider a law above authority, basic rights to be protected by the State, and division of powers.

John Locke wrote the line "life, liberty, and the ownership of property," which you may recognize as a well known line in the US. The Magna Carta was an early (1215) constitution from which our leaders got many basic ideas.
